12/12/2023 0 Comments Forspoken before you buyThat, combined with the fact that Frey sounded indignant but genuinely surprised despite typically rolling with the armband’s off-the-cuff commentary made her response even more funny to me. I say that as someone who laughed after hearing Frey tell Cuff to kiss her you-know-what when the talking armband called her performance so-so after a battle where I had Frey earn the highest rating possible for her performance. Personally, I’ll admit that I was turned off by the constant F-bombs and cursing in the game. So let’s talk about Frey’s, um, potty mouth Balinska does a commendable job in portraying Frey’s fiery, raw personality, which is what many folks seem to have an issue with as opposed to the voice acting itself. It’s a bit unfortunate as a lot of those stem from Frey’s personality and way of speaking as opposed to a fundamental issue with the overarching narrative itself.īy the way, I also think it’s important to separate Balinska’s performance, which I thought was good, from Frey’s character flaws. When people say they have a problem with Forsaken’s story, however, it almost always involves Frey’s dialogue - more specifically, the way she talks. They can be worth a mild chuckle most of the time but can also break your immersion and ruin even the most poignant scenes. Unnatural mouth movements, for example, can make characters look janky. Other issues don’t stem from the story itself but from its delivery instead. These include the use of storytelling tropes as well as character caricatures and cheesy dialogue that can feel lazy or unimaginative at times. Some of the criticism is certainly justified as the narrative has its share of issues. More on this (bleep) later.Īdding to Frey’s woes is the fact that she finds herself unwillingly bonded with an enchanted talking vambrace that she disparagingly calls “Cuff.” This leads to the fantasy equivalent of a buddy-cop adventure as Frey and Cuff unravel the secrets behind the miasma that’s corrupting the land and turning Athia’s inhabitants into monsters.Īdmittedly, Forspoken’s story has been quite polarizing - some people like it while others just absolutely hate it. This, by the way, would be the 11th time that Frey would utter profanity within the first five minutes of arriving in the world of Athia. Things don’t go as planned, however, and Frey ultimately finds herself face to face with - in her own words - a mother (bleeping) dragon just two days later. That’s exactly what Frey intends to do, with plans to leave New York City the next day and start a new life elsewhere. The judge makes it perfectly clear, though, that this was her last chance to straighten up and fix her life. The good news for Frey is that the judge ends up giving her an early Christmas present by sentencing her to community service. The question now is, what happened? Why, yes, Frey, that’s a mother-bleeping dragonįorspoken starts out with a hard-hitting court scene that shows Frey receiving what should be her third strike after yet another incident involving felony theft. Since coming in late January, however, the response to Forsaken has decidedly been mixed. Personally, it was one of my most anticipated titles for this year. Its ranged combat evoked memories of the game Infamous, for example, while its fast, free-flowing movement had Prototype vibes.Īdd the interesting concept of a cool and tough-talking city girl thrust into a fantasy setting and you have all the ingredients of a hit game. When the game was first announced, expectations were ratcheted up quite high thanks to a trailer that did a great job in whetting people’s appetites. It’s almost fitting that Forspoken has to deal with its own issues as far as meeting its potential as well. Making matters worse is that Frey often masks those issues with anger, usually of the unhealthy kind. But after being abandoned as a baby at a New York City tunnel - the Holland Tunnel to be exact - Frey has unfortunately grown up with her fair share of emotional and psychological baggage.įrey’s abandonment issues have seeped quite deep within her psyche in the form of lack of trust and poor self-confidence. It’s something that perfectly encapsulates Forspoken and its flawed heroine.įire Emblem Engage review: No houses? No problemįrey, who is portrayed by actress Ella Balinska, is a young woman brimming with potential and the ability to do good. Or they can douse those very same hopes and fuel disappointment when they don’t live up to their promise. They can stoke the fires of anticipation with the hope of something wonderful. Expectations can be a blessing and a curse.
